My aunt has a shar pei and…?

Well… I’m not sure if the shar pei is being treated right. So here’s the thing: my aunt is living with us (my parents, me and little sister) and she bought a shar pei a few months back. Since she has to work most of the time, she puts her dog in a cage. Back then it was fine since the dog was still a puppy, but as months go by, the dog spends most of its time in a cage and it has grown, hes huge, and the cage is like small on him. My mom just lets him out outside for like an hour or so, in chains, during the morning and then during lunch then at night, where he pees, drink water and roam around in the backyard, and he comes in and goes in his cage. There’s not really any human interactions to him, no one pets him because he smells, and I feel sorry for him because his cage is small and he just sits there or lay there like almost all the time ( he has some toys but not a lot). I talked to my mom about it and my aunt too, that the dog should have some love and human interactions with it and at least roam the house, not locked up in a cage like all the time, but they said that letting him out is good enough. What do you think?

That is never good enough for a dog. They are companions, and they need love and attention as much as we do. Either tell your mother and aunty to pick up their act, or take the dog to someone who will care.

If you really want to get through to them tell them “how would you feel if you were stuck in a small cage, only being let out for an hour at a time with no attention whatsoever”

That is cruelty to animals and no animal should have to put up with that.

Definitely NOT good enough. If he’s well behaved and there’s someone home with him then there is NO reason why he can’t be out around the house or outside at least. If he can’t stand up and turn around then the kennel is too small and he’ll need a new one. If dogs don’t get enough social interactions as a puppy then they grow up misbehaving and anti-social. He will not be okay. Either they need to shape up and treat him better or he needs a new home. Sorry if this sounds a bit rough, I’m not trying to be rude.

What did she get a dog for? Ask her that, she does not deserve to have a dog she doesn’t love and interact with. You can tell her you asked a question on yahoo and people are offended because I am. I hope you place an ad to find the dog a good home, being in a cage with no interaction is like being in a puppy mill in a cage all day. Why do they not give him a bath??? Lazy or just don’t care?? I am frustrated at people who buy pets because of the “name brand” or as a spur of the moment thought. Plead with them to find the dog a home where it can run in the grass outside in the park with owners who care and play fetch, does your aunt even do that? Letting the dog out is not good enough, if they want a pet in a cage, tell them to get a gerbil.
