Is a chinese shar pei a good guard dog?
We had a burglar the other night so my mom wants to buy a new dog. She wants to buy a chinese shar pei since its a fighting dog but I don't think it'll be a good guard dog. What do you guys think?
If the only reason you're looking at getting a new dog is to guard the property, then, honestly, you're better off with a security alarm because it will be a lot less trouble for the same function. Obviously, if you're a dog lover and want a dog as a pet anyway, then that's great!
In my opinion, most large dogs are going to do the job equally well. If a burglar has the choice between a house with barking dogs, and a house without, they're gonna go for the house without unless there's a really good reason to pick your place. My German shepherd reacts instantly to strange noises with a warning bark, but so does my kelpie/labrador, and most people call out from the front gate before entering the property because of this.
Whatever you decide on, research your breed carefully because in addition to their watchdog qualities, there will also be other things to consider like health problems, amount of exercise required, grooming, etc, etc. Most big dogs require plenty of daily exercise, for example.
There are lots of websites which can help you select a dog breed that suits your lifestyle, so have some fun taking quizzes, like the one below, and reading about the different breeds. Good luck!

We have some friends from our dog club, and they are aggressive and good guard dogs…and a lot of this breed does have skin problems….all the loose skin, they have to be very well taken care of…
every one I have ever seen, are the sweetest dogs, but do guard well, but all have had aggression issues…..
not putting the breed down, but yes, were bred originally, bred to fight.
you need to research any breed before buying a dog, make sure it fits your lifestyle.
these dogs are good dogs, but can be aggressive, but again so can any breed….
and you never want to encourage any dog to become aggressive, it is not safe……
I have even seen this breed that are show dogs, that have become aggressive over the years, and have had to stop being shown due to this….not knocking the breed……
heck even a Chi can become aggressive..any breed can…if you train it that way….and some breeds do without being trained to be aggressive….

Get an alarm. Dogs shouldn't be used for protection. Even if someone breaks into your house and the dogs bite them they your dog will be put to sleep because it is considered "dangerous" My boss breeds and shows shar-pei's and not only are they a guard dog but also they are a very dangerous dog. They can easily turn on their owners and have to be handled very wisely! Those and Chow-Chow's are the dogs i fear most!

Almost anydog will try to protect its home and people they love. Sharpies were bred for this reason but they have things you need to be aware of so study the breed, like skin problems in the folds if not cleaned properly or just things like that. Plus to get a well bred one is allot of money. Their are also mixed breed dogs from shelters who are just as nice and protective, you may want to look at a few. I got two adults I have adopted and after about two weeks of living with us are nice but protective. They were both two years old when we got them.
If you want a pure bred dog look into pure bred shelters. I also have a Geman Shepherd but if you are going to pay more than 700$ for a good one You may as well check out the shelters. My friend paid 1,400 for her Shar-pei.
Sorry to here about your burglary thatis very frightening!Any med..to large size dog works wonders when he gets to love his family!

Okay- I have heard a number of people say that shar pei dogs are mean.
BUT I have also heard a number of people on here say chows are mean (like someone on here) and I would personally say that is a load of bull. I have 2 chow mixes and my neighbors have full blooded chows. They have never been aggressive. And I guarantee isn't because my neighbor spends time training them to be sweet.
German Shepards can be mean too when not handled properly. I know a few people that had to lock them up when company comes because they are aggressive. BUT I have also known some that are the sweetest dogs. If you really work with them they are good guard dogs.
Great Pyrenees are a livestock guardian dog so if they view their family as a part of their flock then they are protective of them.
*EDIT* Or like sciencegal10 said you could always get a sharpie.

I don't think the Shar Pei are naturally aggressive. If you want a Chinese dog that is I'd go with the Chow. Infact if you don't Socialize the Chow they will become overly protective… to the point that they may become dangerous to people who live in your neighborhood.
