Why would anyone want to rescue a dog?-Any dog? Well I suppose you need to delve a little deeper and ask the question - why does any dog need rescuing? Many people think of rescue dogs as being “damaged goods”. An example of this thought is children not eating bananas with the black bits on their skins. The bananas are fine but try telling this to children.
Some people may feel that a rescue dog is a second rate dog, one that nobody wants anymore. Well there are many reasons why a dog may need rescuing and may need help from a thoughtful and caring person/family. Many rescue dogs may have strayed and may not have collars/microchips, maybe some of the original dog owners cannot afford to keep their loved ones anymore (i.e. pensioners with over the top, mounting bills or owners who have lost their jobs or their place of residence). Some dog owners cannot deal with their dogs anymore after they realize the ‘full grown size’. They started out as cute little puppies, and then ended up huge Rotttweilers, German Shepherds or even massive Huskies. These larger breeds need constant challenges and exercise-which some dog owners simply cannot provide. This could be due to time or disability. So, not all Rescue dogs are second rate cross-breeds or mongrels. Rescue Centers and Shelters go a long way to make sure each rescued dog is healthy, well fed, and up to date with their shots, as well as helping each dog to be as socially well adjusted as can be, before they are ready to be adopted out by new Dog Owners and/or Families.
So what I am trying to say, is that before you go out and look for a New born
Puppy from a ‘puppy mill or pet store’, perhaps you could give your local Rescue Centers/Shelters a go. You would be saving a dog’s life and you could be making your life fulfilled at the same time.
As for Rescue dogs being out of control and needing extra Dog Training once they are taken home, well I can say that I have had both rescue dogs and new Puppies- fresh from their litters, and the only difference would have to be the Dollar figure I paid for them. Sure some dogs may need more training than others, and some Rescue Dogs may need more comforting but this is more to do with each individual dog’s temperament and its previous circumstance.
I am a self confessed dog lover-you should know that by now, and if I can help rescue any dog, given the opportunity, I would not hesitate.
Take care.

Our family had a Sar pei that we rescued. he was only around 3 yrs old and we had to put him down because he had Limphomia cancer. It broke our familys heart to see him go through that. We would love to get another shar pei but we are so scared to go through the same heart breaking experience again.
Thank you for your time,
The Hohlbein family
I’ve rescued 3 Pies. The 1st was Macgoo, the breeder couldn’t sell him ’cause he had flowered tounge so I took him @ 3years of age. He was so good. We moved to CA and lived there for 1.5 years. The night before we left to move back to Cleve, he didn’t eat and I could tell he wasn’t acting normally. We stopped at a Salt Lake City clinic and they there was nothing wrong. Still didn’t eat or drink very much so we stopped at another clinic North East of Denver and that vet got him to eat a little. We made it back to Cleve and we saw his vet and she immediately put him on fluids, he was in kidney failure. He recovered and was fine for about 8 months but again the kidneys failed and I had to put him to sleep, I didn’t want him to feel the pain on not being about to urinate. 4 years later, I still miss him even though I now have a 7 year old that is a semi-rescue that I got from the 1st owner, (he didn’t want him any more), he’s 7 now and a full rescue that I got from North American Sharpei Rescue in Virginia 3 years ago.
We did a semi- rescue about 5 years ago, Our Little gril is named Maggis, she is a sharpei-blood hound mix and beautiful. The breader didn’t want her and her sister because she wasn’t supose to be ( the Blood Hound jumped the fence). They were passed from one family to another within weeks, most could not take them because of allergies. When they can to us we already had one dog and were we lived there was a By Law that we could only have 2. We found Abby a great home with some friends (now family) and Maggie stayed with us. In March of this year our other dog Lady passed at 19 yrs. Maggie has not been the same. Sometime people forget that our dogs ( cats, what ever you have) Fell just the same as we do, they miss there loved ones the same as us, beating, starving, the cold, play on them just as it would if it was us, so why is it that some think it’s okay???? We spent alot of time at the rescue homes we have here in Ontario, just playing with them, giving them love, food and anything else they need. Sometimes if you can’t take them home spending alittle time with them can make a diffreance too.
I volunteer up to ten hours a week at the SPCA of Texas in Dallas and McKinney. After years in radio and TV, I find this volunteer “job” to be the most rewarding of my life. To give love and exercise and treats to our shelter dogs makes each day I’m there special; and to see a dog I’ve worked with adopted is beyond happy.
I’m in a situation right now where I cannot have a dog of my own so I have a hundred dogs who are excited to see me every day and when I leave them, I know I’ve made them smile or sigh in bliss with a hug or bellyrub. With the recent dogs we’ve taken in from the hurricanes in New Orleans and Galveston/Houston, we’ve offered refuge and comfort and care to victims who don’t understand why their lives were turned upside down. Yes, it can be heartbreaking but if I remember to take each dog into my heart as a friend (and not as a soul I personally have to rescue), I find I can discover the beauty and satifaction of doing the best I can.
God created critters too…should we love them any less?????
Most of my dogs have been rescues. Every one was wonderful! Presently I have “Lilly” the sweetest, gentlest, most loving dog Ive ever had. She is a 4 yr old Shar Pei I found online at a local shelter. Ive never been happier! She is all I asked for at Christmas last year, and is the best Christmas gift Ive ever gotten. Its surprising what nice well behaved dogs are at shelters!
We lost our beloved Shar Pei, Jake, he had FSF, we miss him terribly. We got online and found a wonderful place called Bucaboo Shar Pei Rescue in Jacksonville, FL. We brought home our precious Bubba from the rescue just yesterday. It has been a rewarding experience, and it was heartbreaking as well to see those other beautiful “Pei’s” there just waiting for someone to take them home and love them!
Please find a “Pei” to Rescue, they are out there, just waining for you!
