Hi,
I was out shopping the other day, when I noticed just how many shoppers were purchasing dog food from the supermarket shelves!
Is this the best way to make sure your dog is well looked after, diet and nutrition wise? I don’t think so. I just think we as a society are becoming a little too pressed for time and are giving into supermarket giants and any dog foods to feed our beloved family pets- if we happen to be supermarket shopping, then why not purchase the dog foods available in the same isles we do our family shopping?
I don’t think there are many dog foods available on the supermarket shelves that can claim to be natural and well balanced. This is why I try to provide my dogs (and I have had a few dogs over the years) with my own recipes, sometimes even using raw foods.
This is just something for you to think about before purchasing pre-packaged supermarket dog foods. Did you know that many world famous Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and many Published Dog Care Experts universally agree that any dog that eats commercial dog food as a ‘normal diet’, is at a much higher risk of dying prematurely. And by the time any symptoms are noticeable it is often too late to prevent an agonizing early and sometimes even slow death.
This is just something for you to ponder next time you are thinking about purchasing supermarket processed dog food. Any way I hope I have not depressed you too much speaking about dogs and death, but at least you know the eventual outcome can be reversed by simply watching what you feed your dog.
Take care for now.
I will be getting back to you shortly with some natural and easy to make Free Dog Food Recipes.

I have been trying for months to get your book per internet and you e-mailed back that your book was not available with the internet I have…..Now I get get a e-mail from you saying something to the effect that did I know what I was feeding my dogs, because I am killing them….I do not buy my dog food at the supermarket…….let me know what you mean….S L Smith
I purchase my pets food from a feed store. My daughter seems to think he is obese but he has always been a big pup. He is 1/2 pit and 1/2 sharpei but looks like a sharpei more than pit. His brother weighs almost 80# and he being around 65#. Are the feed store foods better products.
I have had Shar Pei for almost 20 years. The two I have now are on a vegetarian diet. They are thriving and healthy….The basics, even if you feed them kibble, is to avoid the “modern grains”…corn, wheat and soy……the old grains, barley, rice, etc. work fine…they evolved with us around these grains…no hot spots, great coats. I give them flax seed oil sparingly and some of UDO’s enzymes available frome Vitacost, to help them digest well. They east veggies blended with potatoes, etc.
My daughter’s Pei is 14 years old…a virtual record. I have had them die at anywhere from 6.5yrs to 9, years, before I switched the diets….of course they are walked daily and loved unconditionally….everyone they meet says they are the sweetest Peis anywhere.
I got these two, a creme male and a black female from the Redding CA. rescue…one of the best in the country.
I don’t live “alone”, cause I have my Peis

I currently feen my sharpei Otis dry dog food, from the supermarket. It is called purina’s dog show or a couple months ago I was feeding him purina’s healthy morsels with salmon. Is this bad for his health?

To Christopher, I am looking into changing my shar-peis diet. He is currently on Wellness whitefish and sweetpotatoe kibbel. He has always done very well on it. The last month he has re-occuring episodes of Shar-pei fever and swollen hock. He has has 5 since Sept 15th, tough time. He takes medicine along with that I though maybe lowering his purine intake would be a good idea. Please give me your receipe for the vegitarian diet that your shar-peis are doing well on. I would sure appreciate it. Thank you. My Shar-pei will turn 5 in December.
Cathy
We have tryed probably 10 different foods ranging from $20-$70. Pills (Vitimans) etc. We want something healthy and fresh. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks
I also used the Wellness brand and found the same response, my Pei’s pads were red, itchy, and swollen. It seems that she could be meat sensitive and so I have switched her diet to a vegetarian brand food, Avoderm Natural, which I add fresh broccoli. It’s been about 3 months and her pads are much improved. I do notice that when she has been given a non-vegetarian treat that later in the day she starts licking her chops incessantly.
Cathy, I am so sorry your Pei suffers from Shar-Pei Fever. My Pei, Molly, had terrible bouts with it for years. We even traveled with meds and IV bags to support through the fevers. The frequency had gotten to one every 7 to 10 days. Her last episode was so bad it lasted for 3 days with her fever spiking at 107!!! and then, from the fever, she developed a blood clot on her spinal cord causing complete hind leg paralysis. Thankfully, we were able to nurse her back to health and she has recovered with only mininal weakness in her one leg. It took almost a year; but along the we learned some things. She now eats NO GRAIN whatsoever. We feed her Innova EVO kibble which was recommended to us by her accupuncturist; he helped her tremendously. He also recommended a Chinese herbal blend for animals called Four Marvels (Kan Essentials - Si Miao San). He tried differant herbs but this one worked best for her. We also give her DVM’s Skin Formula 3V Caps (a dietary supplement with Omega 3 fish oil tablets and antioxidants), as well as meds for her low thyroid and Colchicine. I am happy to say that since June 23, 2007 she has been fever free.
She is now a healthy and happy 6 1/2 year old. Please note - I am just telling you what we do for her and am not recommending anything. I hope you an find what your Pei needs to live fever free.
