I’ve always been curious about this behavior in my dogs?

I have three dogs (all fixed): A 13 year old blue heeler mix, a 9 year old male Samoyed/Retriever mix and a 1 year old male Shar-pei mix. All three of my dogs lick and groom each other, especially around the face and ears. It seems to be a social bonding thing. My female heeler especially does this, even to the point of holding down the other dogs with a paw on the top of their heads, to make sure she licks around the eyes and ears. All of the dogs seem to tolerate it and even relax when the female “grooms” them.

I’m just curious about the reason for the behavior. Is it social “pack bonding”, is my female mothering the other two and asserting dominance in the sense that she’s acting like their mother and treating them like puppies?

It’s just something I’ve wondered.

Thanks so much.

My oldest Dachshund (13 y) is the “official groomer” in my Weener Dog Pack. He licks the faces/heads of the other three Dachshunds in the house, including my intact male, who is nearly 2. They go to him and lay down in front of him specifically to get a bath.

I have no idea why he does this, but they seek him out, and he seems to take it very seriously. He will even bathe people, if they allow it. It may well be an alpha role thing.

Can’t live without my Porkchop!

I can't live without my Porkchop“Porkchop”  is a little over a year and the love of our family!  She loves kids!!!  Especially our Kyle and Mia.  She is the most loyal and friendy dog we have seen.  Well behaved, although she does push at times to keep her place.  Loves to steal something from us (usually a sock)  and then tease you by running all over the house wanting to be chased.  Never seen this before in a dog but she will swing her butt to knock down the kids wrestling so that they end up more even in size (kids are 6 and 7 and love this dog!)

Due to color, we are often asked what type of dog she is.  So for the record, Porkchop is a full blooded sharpei.

p.s. i like wrinkly doggies xD

The boxer is cuter (to me) because I think the other one is just too wrinkley, LOL. If you go to:

http://www.puppyfinder.com/

You can look up the two breeds and compare other characteristics.. I’m doing it right now because my fiance and I can’t decide on one dog. =P So we’re going to go with the more compatable one! Obviously if you’re posting pics of them both you’d be happy with either, so why not see what else the breeds are known for? Good luck and hope you like your new puppy!!
